Top Non-Dairy Yogurt Recipes Online

Our team gets a lot of questions about how to make non-dairy yogurt. Making soy yogurt is fairly straightforward and similar to making dairy yogurt. But many consumers have written in about making almond and coconut yogurt. We have been testing different recipes for making yogurt with almond and coconut milk and we are in the process of refining our posts on these subjects.

In the meantime, we have found numerous experienced and reputable bloggers who have posted about making almond and coconut milk yogurt at home and we wanted to share a few of our personal faves with everyone.

ALMOND MILK YOGURT...IT'S MAKING ME NUTS

One of the foremost misconceptions out there is that you can make almond milk yogurt with a carton of almond milk that you buy off the shelf or from the refrigerator case at the grocery store. In all of recipes featured below, the bloggers call for making your own almond milk from scratch. Although it may sound difficult, making your own almond milk is actually something even a nut milk neophyte can easily master.

You can soak your almonds overnight and, using a blender, create an almond/water slurry that you can strain using a nut milk bag and a mason jar. In any case, the best practice in making almond milk yogurt at home is to start with fresh, homemade almond milk.

IT'S PARADISE IN MY SPOON...COCONUT MILK YOGURT

Making coconut milk yogurt is different than making almond milk yogurt because you can start with canned coconut milk. Keep in mind, you cannot make yogurt with coconut water, you have to be using coconut milk (made from the meat of the coconut.) There are many different brands of canned coconut milk available and we are currently testing a variety of brands.

IN THE THICK OF IT...

The coconut and almond milk yogurt that is available at the supermarket has many other ingredients added to it to achieve a thick consistency. There are many natural and gluten-free ingredients that you can buy online or at your local health-food store that can help make your coconut milk yogurt thicker. Some of these are: arrowroot powder, agar (aka Agar Agar), tapioca starch, or carageen. Many dairy yogurts use gelatin as an added thickener and there is also a vegetable gum based "vegan gelatin" which is on the market.
